A two-alarm fire was quickly knocked down early this morning at a Midwood Road home, said Ridgewood Fire Chief Jim Bombace.
No one was injured in the blaze.

Bombace said that the fire started in the area between the first floor and second floor along the chimney and extended to the void between the second floor and the roof. He also said that there was renovations being done inside the home, but could not comment further to say if it contributed to the fire.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” said Bombace, who lives directly across the street from the house.

Bombace’s wife alerted him to the smoke coming from the house across the street.

  1. Remember folks, Betty Wiest and Jacques Harlow were rumored to have been non-supportive of a paid fire department. Jim Ten Hoeve has also gone on record as questioning the cost effectiveness of a professional fire fighting force. Seconds count when fire strikes. Make sure your Village Council knows you support the continuation of a paid fire department. Your life and your property may depend upon this.

  2. Good job RFD! Just imagine the extra damage that would have occured if it was in a town that had to wait for the volunteers to drive to the station to get on the trucks…10 minutes can make the difference between saving the structure..or saving the foundation..

  3. Good work Vicki!!!!

And, as always, Good work RFD!!!!

  4. a great job men,and they talk about lay offs, yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

  5. What is going to happen once Valley Hospital gets to “Expand”?
Is our Fire Department ready for the taller buildings and the more densely packed structures? Is the fire Dept ready for the possible problems associated with the massive building and demolition planned for this part of town?
Will Valley Hospital help to pay for the necessary changes to the fire dept to cope with its changes?

The “Expansion” of Valley Hospital has far reaching consequences… think on it!

  6. If The Ridgewood Fire Department needs assistance in the event of a fire at the hospital or any building in Ridgewood there is MUTUAL AID. Surrounding towns assist.

  7. good point 11;11am. Perhaps as part of any approvals valley should be required to pay for some bigger ladder trucks, pumpers, and the manpower to crew them. Its still a bargain since Valley is pretentding to be non profit and doesnt pay real estate taxes like us residents

  8. to 1238 thats so true.

  9. With the already critical lack of staffing, ANY expansion to Valley Hospital would create a serious risk. The initial response is only going to be between 9 and 12 firefighters. Given the makeup of the buildings, ALL of those are going to be needed just to attempt to contain any fire, forget about rescue and evacuation.

  10. Update – Graydon Pool Project – Upcoming Open Houses – from Village of Ridgewood website:

Representatives from the Ridgewood Pool Project, Parks and Recreation, and the Village Council will hold a series of Open Houses to discuss design concepts for the proposed Graydon Pool renovation. All residents are invited to come and share their opinions. The object of these sessions is to gather as much resident feedback as possible for the Council to consider before it decides how to proceed, when feasible, with the hiring of an architectural-design firm. Meetings will be held at the Community Center in Village Hall.
