3/5 GeesePeace Training & Refresher Workshop
Sponsored by Village and League of Women Voters
GEESEPEACE LOCAL VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED Canada geese are a statewide problem; the time is now to address the health and safety issues of their droppings which pollute our playing fields, waterways, parks, golf courses, lawns and sidewalks. Working together, we can make a difference in the quality of life in our community. The League of Women Voters of Ridgewood, in partnership with The Village of Ridgewood Municipal Departments of Parks and Recreation and Public Works will again offer a GeesePeace Training Course and Refresher Workshop for interested volunteers. Workshops will be held on Thursday, March 5th, in the Senior Lounge of the Community Center, 131 North Maple Avenue. Each session is for two hours; offered 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. or 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be offered. Pre-registration is required. Training through the GeesePeace Foundation has been successful in stabilizing the Canada Goose population by following its humane protocol. The addling process entails locating and identifying nests, distracting the geese, and oiling the eggs with corn oil to inhibit the production of an air sac; hence no birth of goslings. A total of 314 eggs have been addled since the 2007 initiation of this program within the Village which will result in the reduction of approximately 10,000 geese within the next 8 years. GeesePeace is a non-profit organization endorsed by the Humane Society US, the Audubon Society and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). You may register by telephone to 201-670-5560 or you can print a registration form off the Recreation homepage at http://www.ridgewoodnj.net and mail to Ridgewood Recreation, 259 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
