Any time the status quo is challenged the automatic response seems to be to accuse the challenger of “meanness” . Any time some new entitlement gets challenged there is a resounding call to silence the critics! After all they are out of the main stream, lunatic fringe, reactionaries, fundamentalists and maybe worst of all conservatives. The repetitiveness of some of the criticism gives away its true intent which is to defend the status quo at all costs and those benefitting from it . Which often has little or nothing to do with the disputed issue.
Perhaps we need to shift the debate and focus on real solutions and by that I mean challenging some of these very entitlements, not just assuming their validity and searching for a new revenue sources. After all are we all entitled to everything with out ever having to do anything?
It seems we continue to broaden the definitions of who qualifies for what special program. This broadening of entitlements has put severe strain on the system and I would argue pushes away those who would really need and would benefit from these programs. While the government has proven time and time again to be a very poor deliverer of services.
Folks we face serious economic challenges and maybe its time to trim back our expectations little or look for new and revolutionary ways to deliver services and meet the challenges of this village. After all didn’t we just have a national election that was decided by voters who were looking for a change? So again I ask why is it then that when anyone challenges the status quo they get attacked so vigorously? Where is the change?
