Where is the change?

In Uncategorized on December 19, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Any time the status quo is challenged the automatic response seems to be to accuse the challenger of “meanness” . Any time some new entitlement gets challenged there is a resounding call to silence the critics! After all they are out of the main stream, lunatic fringe, reactionaries, fundamentalists and maybe worst of all conservatives. The repetitiveness of some of the criticism gives away its true intent which is to defend the status quo at all costs and those benefitting from it . Which often has little or nothing to do with the disputed issue.

Perhaps we need to shift the debate and focus on real solutions and by that I mean challenging some of these very entitlements, not just assuming their validity and searching for a new revenue sources. After all are we all entitled to everything with out ever having to do anything?

It seems we continue to broaden the definitions of who qualifies for what special program. This broadening of entitlements has put severe strain on the system and I would argue pushes away those who would really need and would benefit from these programs. While the government has proven time and time again to be a very poor deliverer of services.

Folks we face serious economic challenges and maybe its time to trim back our expectations little or look for new and revolutionary ways to deliver services and meet the challenges of this village. After all didn’t we just have a national election that was decided by voters who were looking for a change? So again I ask why is it then that when anyone challenges the status quo they get attacked so vigorously? Where is the change?

    Not "any time".

People are called out for "meanness" when they say things like "the BOE are a bunch of idiots" or "Fishbein is a puppet" or "the Village Council is a bunch of morons" or "Hutton is a caddy" or "Botsford is a demagogue who is hell-bent on destroying our schools" etc. etc.

Meanness = personal, nasty, vindictive attacks

The repetitiveness of these attacks ("ad nauseum" & "ad infinitum", as Councilwoman Zusy says above) are what elevate their authors to the status "lunatic fringe".

Hope this explanation helps! Have a great snow day!

  2. The change is in my pocket. That is all the money I have left after paying my bills and taxes.

  3. Change is used but not meant by politicians. At least not ours here in Ridgewood.

Real change does not mean moving the Christmas Tree or decorating it in garbage. It does not mean turfing every field in a flood zone. Nor does it mean pretending to fix our elementary math program.

No, real change to our pols and their bureaucrats means stifling those that would hold them to higher standards.

This is done by vilifying those who would dare suggest a better or more efficient solution. Or who suggest that things are not as they seem.

It is sad to see people, no matter who grim the reality, turn their back on change and settle for the status quo because it is easier than standing up for what is most beneficial to our village.

  4. garbage on a bush is not change for the better disgracefull!

oh an I name calling again …you deserve it !!!!

Until you produce their IQ scores, how can you say the BOE are not idiots, or imbeciles or morons? Maybe they would grade out as “dull normal.” But even if they are not idiots, they do idiotic things.

After all, they have supported the standards-based remedial math programs in a district of high performers. Now isn’t that, let’s say, “not so smart.” Should dull normals be deciding the direction for math in our schools?

I’m sure Botsford doesn’t mean to be destroying our schools, but she’s doing it anyway. And she is a liar.

  6. 11:57 not true especially when those comments are supported by the actions of those they reference.
