We are just lowering the bar once again…..

In Uncategorized on December 15, 2008 at 2:08 am

By accepting this tree (as decorated) we are just teaching kids that it is acceptable to use garbage as decorations. We are just lowering the bar.

The larger underlying message of this “teaching” will not serve them well in the future (when they leave the increasingly wacky bubble that is Ridgewood) even though it is the larger underlying message that the BOE and VC is specifically trying to teach them.

Ridgewood kids used to go into the world with a distinct advantage over their peers. Now the BOE and VC seem hell bent on sending them into the world with a distinct disadvantage.

Common sense left the administrators long ago and now it is being systematically removed from your children unless you teach it to them at home.

  1. well said !!!!!!

  2. We are teaching our kids how to be a kvetch. They'll leave Ridgewood knowing how to whine & moan about every non-issue under the sun.

  3. You must not live in the same Ridgewood as I do. I disagree with everything you said.

  4. Indeed.

  5. Can we just move on from this.

  6. Re 8:46AM:

“Can we just move on from this.”

“I fear that the “wilding” complainers will start throwing shoes at the BOE and VC.”

I see the BOE / VC hacks are in early this morning posting preemptive attacks to those who criticize them.

    Your tax dollars at work.

  7. Somehow, whining about the BOE / VC makes one a champion of free speech, but defending the BOE / VC makes one a “hack”.

Bizarre double-standard by the shoe-throwers in town.

  8. Somehow, whining about the BOE / VC makes one a champion of free speech, but defending the BOE / VC makes one a “hack”.

You are defending mediocrity, political correctness, gross misjudgment and ineptitude. You, therefore, cannot be taken seriously unless you are campaigning for the role of official ass kisser of these Village Idiots…eh, decision makers.

  9. Dear Ms. Zusy,

It is Orwellian to take recyclable garbage and call it “green.”

What is “green?” Green implies “of nature” or natural to the environment, therefore not harmful to it. Plastic is harmful to the environment because it is not biodegradable and constitutes unsightly garbage when disposed in a natural environment. It is not Green.

Does placing it on a tree, much less a Christmas tree, make it not garbage? No. Will throwing it on the ground make it not garbage? No. Does stringing it together make it not garbage? No.

If you are to be believed, simply using a plastic bottle for something other than for what it is intended, such as putting it on a tree, is green. But how so? It remains a plastic product no matter what it is used for.

Ultimately plastic is recycled to prevent having to create even more plastic. Although recycling causes the use of energy and carbon emissions, this is a price we pay to limit the creation of even more plastic.

If plastic is not recycled, then even more must be created. So not recycling plastic, by using it instead as ornaments, means that more plastic is created. How is this green?

Truth be told, none of this activity qualifies as green under any guise whatsoever. Telling children that they are being environmentally friendly when they forgo beautiful ornaments for phony ornaments made of plastic bottles is a lie.

This is a lie not unlike the ones Orwell warned us about. When such lies are told to children too young to reason their way around such propagandistic beliefs, one approaches the doorstep of evil.

I urge you to take some time to deconstruct your own rhetoric and make the necessary adjustments that will ultimately lead you to pursue the truth. Absent such intellectual honesty, you become a poor servant of the public trust. You also become a willing pawn of those for whom the ends justify the means.

Ms. Kirkpatrick once said, “ideas have consequences.” Annie, it is worth remembering that words shape our ideas and the ideas of our upcoming generation.

Neither plastic nor the use of plastic should ever be construed as “green.”

  10. mediocrity, political correctness, gross misjudgment and ineptitude

And you are kvetching about non-issues.

Most people in town love the Village and know that our schools are excellent. That’s why we choose to live here and send our kids to Ridgewood public schools.

The only “political correctness” they see is that’s “uncool” to say something positive about Ridgewood on this blog.

  11. Soo everyone stop complaining….get together and head over tot he tree with new lights, decorations and otjher nice things. REBEL I tell you…REBEL against the VC and go make that tree look like what it should!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. get together and head over tot he tree with new lights, decorations and otjher nice things. REBEL I tell you…REBEL against the VC and go make that tree look like what it should!!!!!!!!!!!

And a Merry Christmas to you!

Let’s hope Santa brings you a new keyboardddddddddddd that doesn’t get stuckkkkkkkkkkk.

  13. Our schools are excellent? Compared to what? Have you been to REAL schools lately?

Our schools are getting by on their reputation. The curriculaum is dumbed down and the emphasis on”self-esteem” is palpable.

  14. Who cares about the darn tree?? Many of you who have time to ruminate about this minutia seem to have very little of importance to worry about and much too much time on your hands! I don’t know about you, but I am much more concerned about our economy, the future of our country, whether my husband and I will have jobs in 3 months and how we will pay for our children’s college tuition with our 401Ks down 50%. I am not sweating the small stuff!

    Here… fixed that fer ya:

  16. "Common sense left the administrators long ago and now it is being systematically removed from your children unless you teach it to them at home."

Common sense is being systematically removed from our children?

Please, stop being a Drama Queen. The dress & crown don't fit you.

  17. Cottage Pl. doesn’t know its ass from its elbow. They have wasted our money, screwed up our schools, let our school structures crumble around our kids, stopped providing textbooks to certain elementary schools, brought in new programs without exercising proper policy procedures, the list goes on and on. Our district’s success rests on the shoulders of so many of our wonderful, dedicated, and talented teaching staff. Thank you to all of the teachers that teach what they know to be necessary. Instead of following Vegina’s dumbing down, watering down, touchy feely bullshit!

And will you vote “Yes” on the school 24 Million dollar bond and 82 million dollar budget so your property taxes can go up again?

  19. 6:37 –

Yes. Yes we will, because we are clueless.
