Car grazes stroller; motorist cited

By Tom Davis

THE RECORD

Monday, November 17

RIDGEWOOD – A 61-year-old woman was charged Sunday with failing to stop at a crosswalk after her car grazed a stroller carrying a 1-year-old girl, police said.

The girl, Maria Semenchenko, and her mother, Irena, both of Ridgewood, were not injured in the incident, which occurred around 5 p.m. at Godwin Avenue and Sherman Place, police said.

Elizabeth Searle of New York was driving through the intersection when she skimmed the front end of the stroller as Irena Semenchenko was pushing it across Godwin Avenue.

Police said they responded to the scene but no one required medical attention.

**********

More information from The Fly: Elizabeth Searle is the Rector of Christ Episcopal Church, located at 105 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. Reverend Searle has resided in a Church owned home on South Pleasant Avenue for at least the past 2 years. The Fly fails to understand why the Rector told police that she lives in New York, although her personal automobile still has New York State license plates affixed. Isn’t it a violation of NJ State motor vehicle laws to live in NJ, but yet maintain that you officially reside in another state, and not change your driver’s license and registration?

  1. The driver is the priest at Christ Church. Why is she listed as living in New York? She lives in Ridgewood. Did she lie to the cops?

  2. Why does the article say the girl was “skimmed” when the posting from yesterday says a neighbor heard the thump from inside her house?

  3. I know the family that was hit very very well…

    for the record:

The entire stroller was destroyed (ripped in two), and the lower portion where the baby was flung abt 5 meters. Marsha (the actually spelling of her name) did go to the hospital, but only had a few scratches on here head

Sry for the correction, but incomplete reporting by the record seams habitual

  4. Does anyone know the relevance of stating that this was a “Local Minister” in the title of the story?

How is this so relevant that it needs to be led with in the title?

It looks to me to be a swipe (pardon the pun) at the church for no apparent reason. Maybe it’s just poor reporting.

Why not “Police Charge Ridgewood Resident” or “Local Woman” or “Elizabeth Searle”?

Was she acting in her capacity as Rector when the accident occurred?

  5. Why not “Police Charge Ridgewood Resident” or “Local Woman” or “Elizabeth Searle”?

She is known as a local minister but she denied being a local resident. Thus, local minister seemed more appropriate.

  6. Why am I not surprised? We call this the “Ridgewood Roll Through”. For reasons that are still unclear, it seems that an increasing number of drivers no longer feel it’s necessary to stop or yield to pedestrians.

Last summer, while walking downtown, I was in the cross walk when I looked up to see a huge black pick up with the American Flag plastered on his back window barreling toward me. He only hit his brakes when he was about two feet away. I looked up and screamed, “What the hell are you doing!?” To which the idiot replied, “I’m driving, what are you doing?” Regrettably, my response is not printable. Unfortunately, I still see this moron driving around town.

  7. It is totally appropriate to mention that she is a minister. Why not? If she were a doctor or a teacher the title of the article could say “Local teacher charged.” Second, it isw baffling to me why the Record would use the word “grazed” when eyewitnesses clearly say that it was more than a graze (by far). Third, what is the story with someone (minister or not) who lives in town for more than two years but maintains an address and driver license from out of state and portrays herself as a New York resident? This seems downright fishy to me. The whole story stinks.

  8. Seems like a lot of you were at the scene, and saw the whole thing… concluded the preacher must’ve lied…must have been speeding. the mother couldn’t possibly have pushed the stroller into harm’s way, in the dark, expecting cars to see her. any good mother would wait for traffic to go by,wouldn’t they? our predilection to rush to judgement, is unfortunate.

  9. The benefit of not having a NJ license is that you don’t have to bother memorizing those pesky laws.

39:4-36. Driver to yield to pedestrian at crosswalk; exceptions; vehicles approaching stopped vehicle from rear; yield of right-of-way by pedestrian The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except at crosswalks when the movement of traffic is being regulated by police officers or traffic control signals, or where otherwise prohibited by municipal, county, or State regulation, and except where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedestrian crossing has been provided, but no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield. Nothing contained herein shall relieve a pedestrian from using due care for his safety.
Whenever any vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.

Every pedestrian upon a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

Nothing contained herein shall relieve a driver from the duty to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian upon a roadway.

  10. 6.43pm: How dare you. Pedestrians always have the right of way, whether they are on the crosswalk, or waiting to cross the crosswalk. If one has to wait for all the traffic to go by, then why even bother with crosswalks?

I live by this particular crosswalk and regularly use it. I can’t tell you how many times I have waited to cross, when one lane of traffic stops, and it looks like the other lane is slowing down to let you cross, only to start walking and that slowing down lane just keeps rolling on through.

I have just returned from a driving vacation in Europe and the one thing that resonated with me was just the overall differences between driving standards. Driving standards in this country are appalling. Getting a licence is akin to getting a supermarket discount card.

  11. The preacher lady was driving recklessly. End of story,

  12. 6:43pm

You’re an idiot, I know the mother and she would never put her baby in harms way.

It was still light out when this accident happened. The driver was reckless and not paying attention.

  13. I wonder if the preacher lady’s insurance company is aware her car is being used primarily in NJ, not NY. NY has cheaper car insurance; I’ll bet that’s why she hasnt’ converted either her license or registration.

  14. …I looked up to see a huge black pick up with the American Flag plastered on his back window barreling toward me

    Wow.
I didn’t know that witches had x-ray vision.

    …learn something new everyday.

  15. Wow, I didn’t realize it takes x-ray vision to get a real good look at the back of a car that’s passing you. It obviously escaped your attention, but that’s where the license plate usually is. Just in case, oh I don’t know, a police report might come in handy.

Learning something new every day only applies to those who’s minds are open to the knowledge.

  16. I don’t believe this woman being a member of the clergy is has any relevance at all to the accident.

I can’t help wondering if it’s inclusion was just to add to the “drama”.

  17. Of course her being a clergy person is relevant.

  18. 8:34 –

Re: “I can’t help wondering if it’s inclusion was just to add to the “drama”.

    When you’re right, you’re right.

It also doesn’t hurt to bash organized religion at any opportunity you get. (pg 259. “Reporters Handbook of Style” – North Jersey Media Group)

  19. “…but no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield. Nothing contained herein shall relieve a pedestrian from using due care for his safety.”

Yes, it as DARK at 5:17pm Sunday night. Would YOU push a baby in a stroller across a busy street in the DARK, without waiting for oncoming cars to stop???good luck with that.

  20. 11:32 is right. Mothers should refrain from taking their babies out of night so that cars can speed at will and ignore all other traffic safety laws. There is no good reason for babies to be out at that time of night.

  21. 716 “I have just returned from a driving vacation in Europe and the one thing that resonated with me was just the overall differences between driving standards. Driving standards in this country are appalling. Getting a licence is akin to getting a supermarket discount card.” ……
I gotta laugh about this bogus post guess you didnt drive in Spain,Italy or France and btw cars have the right away in Germany lol!!

but i do agree with on thing you said “Getting a licence is akin to getting a supermarket discount card.” if they have a licence lol

Of course her being a clergy person is relevant.

Really? What part did her affiliation with a religious organization play in the accident? Was being a minister supposed to make her a better driver? Was God supposed to prevent the accident from happening?

In my humble opinion, the only reason one would include the fact that the woman is a minister would be to catch the eye of the reader and make the story more interesting.

She’s could be a minister, a sanitation worker or the Pope and it still wouldn’t make the story less unfortunate.

  23. Re: “I can’t help wondering if it’s inclusion was just to add to the “drama”.”

“Ahh, it’s good to be right” ~ Al Pacino ~ Devil’s Advocate

  24. Amazing..a story like a baby getting struck by a car and you can still get a debate out of it.

  25. Gosh, it sure looks like there’s a reporter or two in our midst! What fun! Culture wars, round three.
Though a return to the rule of law, might trump all this speculation, and drama.

  26. I too know that crosswalk. While it is marked on the pavement, there is no prominent signage or cones in the walkway to warn motorists as to its existence. Once it is dark, it is difficult to see. While I sympathize with the mother and her child, as a previous correspondent has noted, the pedestrian has an obligation to exercise due care under the law. It therefore seems to me that the mother should not have pushed her stroller into the cross walk and thereby risked the child’s life until she was sure that the oncoming car in question had seen her and was slowing to a stop. Without determining that the driver had seen her, it was irresponsible for the mother to enter the crosswalk in reliance on an ordinance. Since it does not seem like the driver has been accused of speeding or any other infraction, the mother appears to have unduly risked her child’s life.

I am familiar with the English crosswalks and the care with which drivers in that country approach pedestrians in crosswalks. The major difference between the two country’s approaches, however, is that English crosswalks are prominently marked if a driver is expected to yield the right of way. They have 6 foot high poles with light globes on top and zigzag curb markings on such protected crosswalks. A driver that disregards such warnings is in serious breech of traffic laws. There are other crosswalks in England that are less well marked (similar to our crosswalks) which pedestrians can use at their own risk. The law here, while well intentioned, needs to require better markings to really work.

  27. Referring to her profession was correct. Like someone previously said, if the person was a doctor, a teacher, or a lawyer, it would have been reported the same way.

No-one is suggesting that cars should stop on a dime if some idiot pedestrian lurches out. If people drove at the correct speed limit, it’s easy to stop fairly quickly while at the same time, being able to pay attention to crosswalks.

As for the couple of idiots who insist that a mother shouldn’t be crossing a street at night. It was 5pm for heaven’s sake.

I also hope that the police officer checked the driver for vision. According to someone at the scene, the driver’s glasses were pretty darn thick!

  28. To Via La France!

I wonder when you were last driving in Europe. As a frequent traveller (and driver) to Europe over the years, I think I have some knowledge on the subject. On my recent trip, I drove from Germany, through France, and through much of Spain. I didn’t see a single pothole, encounter any road rage, or see a single accident. I don’t think I heard a horn honk. Cars all overtook on the correct side (unlike here where they pass you either side). Don’t get all defensive about this great country where we are all conditioned to believe that everything is the best in the world. Many things yes, but quite a lot of things, no. Driving standards are one thing that Europeans, in general, beat us on. Ask any European expatriate here about this subject.

Of course you can. That’s the beauty of having the right to voice one’s own opinion.

I understand that referring to one’s profession might be a standard in reporting, I’m just unsure how it was relevant to the story.

Now if I had been the driver, I could imagine that a story line such as “Ridgewood Witch Hits Pedestrian” might certainly be an attention grabber for some. In this case however, I’m just not certain that her being a minister does not really makes any difference in the big picture of things.

Quite frankly, I have sympathy for all the parties involved. I’m sure the last thing this woman wanted to to injure anyone and I’m certain that the child’s mother wouldn’t intentionally do something to put herself or her baby in harm’s way. I guess that’s why it’s called an “accident”.

We’re talking about the ability to make a debate out of anything.

    What are you asking about?

  33. 10.11am. It has a lot to do with this accident. I was trying to point out the poor, and declining, driving standards in this country. It’s indicative of much of the general dumbing-down of America.

  34. 6:44 – Try again. The ordinance states that it also applies to any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. If you see a pedestrian trying to cross at any intersection, you should yield. Stop trying to make excuses for the driver to assuage your guilt of not yielding to pedestrians. Leave a few minutes earlier when traveling by car and obey the trafic laws. Driving is a privilege and not a right.

The way I see it, the law of physics still applies to Ridgewood and you can only fit so many people and so many vehicles into one area. Sooner or later they are bound to run into each other both literally and figuratively. Just sayin’

  36. A potentially horrible incident and one is glad the family escaped serious injury.

One also calls to mind the incident when our Village Manager plowed through a stop sign and hit a child on a bike. No charges were filed in that episode — perhaps proving the separation of church and state?

  37. A minister should be a particularly careful driver in my opinion. This one evidently is not a careful driver and not very meticulous with her paperwork in re where she actually lives.

  38. A minister should be a particularly careful driver in my opinion.

    Why is that?

  39. Re: Referring to her profession was correct. Like someone previously said, if the person was a doctor, a teacher, or a lawyer, it would have been reported the same way.

Got it… like it’s correct to say “Police Charge Local Black Woman In Sunday Evening Pedestrian Accident”, right?

and it’s correct to say “Police Charge Local Gay Man In Sunday Evening Pedestrian Accident”, right?

  40. How about “Police Charge Local Gay, Caucasian, Dishonest, Careless, Minister in Sunday Evening Pedestrian Accident? The world loves adjectives.

    7:26 PM

A minister should be a particularly careful driver? Why should she be anymore particularly careful than the rest of us? She preaches the word of God. She’s not a Driving Instructor.

Everyone of us should be a particularly careful driver. We are in control of tons of steel. No matter what are religious affiliations are or what profession we are in.

Thanks! Never heard that one before! Witch, Wiccan, Wiccan-American It’s all good.

At least I have pride in who I am and what I believe, instead of hiding behind an “anonymous” on a message board and bashing people I know nothing about.

Rather denotes a lack of courage, in my humble opinion.

  50. Today the story is in the Ridgewood News….and the fact that she is CLERGY is in their HEADLINE. And there is conflicting information…………..the Rwd News says there was no damage to the stroller while one of the witnesses says the stroller was destroyed. The Rwd News says there were no injuries while one of the witnesses says there were cuts and scratches on the baby’s head. There is something VERY FISHY going on with this entire story.

  51. you bi-polar conspiracy theorists should probably be taking your meds.
The ” alleged” witness who says the stroller was trashed is either mad or lying or both. I actually SAW the stroller, perfectly intact, except for its awning, which fell off. it sat on the curb for several hours. I was afraid someone was going to steal it because it was in good shape. “Fishy” lady, you gotta expand your vocabulary. you’re giving yourself away.

  52. Glinda (Tracy)I think you’re terrific. Don’t let the “scolds” take you down their self-righteous path of
    hatred and intolerance. Compassion rules!

  53. So the Village balked at improved street lighting several years ago because the “powers that be” didn’t like the color choice for the poles, being offered by the utility. How smart is that. We might note there have been SEVERAL close encounters between vehicles and pedestrians, at night, in the past two weeks. Not all of them reported to this extent.

Thank you so much! And, trust me, bringing me down their path is not even remotely possible!

What I shudder to think of is that this person might actually be a parent. I would hate to imagine what kind of wisdom they impart on their children.

I read the story in the Ridgewood News as well. It also provided a statement given by the driver a.k.a. The Minister. I’m wondering if they attempted to interview the parents for the article as well. There does indeed seem to be conflicts. I would like to hear the parents version.

  56. I walked passed the stroller, too, on my way to the station the following morning. I hadn’t heard about the accident at that time. Maybe “destroyed” is a stretch (that wasn’t my post), but it was far from normal. The structure of the stroller was clearly damaged, looking quite disfigured. I thought it had been left out for bulk garbage collection.

I think you might be confusing Wicca with one of those other alternative religions, Sam. I’m pretty sure the worship of any type of furniture is called “Upholsterian”. }:)

Mocking is not my style. Who am I to come between an man and his sofa. Carry on.

  59. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when Glinda is the voice of reason.

    Fixed that fer ya…

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when someone who runs around naked under the full moon worshipping “the horned god” and casting spells is the voice of reason.

  60. And consecrating bread and wine and using it to represent the drinking blood and eating flesh is
perfectly reasonable of a crucified Savior is perfectly reasonable?

By the way, I presume you were there when I was doing all these things, because if not, you might be talking out your a$$.

I would rather be portrayed as worshipping a Horned God, dancing naked under the full moon and casting spells, than an ignorant bigot. You seem to prefer the latter. Good luck with that.

Reiterating someone’s ignorance really isn’t really a “fix” it’s more of a clarification.

With the exception of yourself and the original poster, I think most people were intelligent enough to recognize it as blatantly obvious the first time.

  62. “And consecrating bread and wine and using it to represent the drinking blood and eating flesh is
perfectly reasonable of a crucified Savior is perfectly reasonable?”

Seems like a pretty bigoted ignorant comment, don’t you think?

Taking an arbitrary swipe at some other religion (not even against me) shows you to be a pretty ignorant angry bigoted person.

But I guess that is to be expected from someone who’s dogma is “do whatever you want to do”.

It looks like you’ve still got some issues to work out with your hatred of other religions. After you resolve those, you can focus on your hatred of me for stating honestly what it is that you do.

    10:01 AM

My hatred of you? How convenient of you to forget that this discussion began with your insulting my religious beliefs.

You find it bigoted to point out a practice that is customary in the Christian religion? Do Christians not partake in the symbolic body and blood of Christ in their religious services? Is it so difficult for you to grasp that other cultures might find this unreasonable? I personally, have absolutely no problem with it or anyone else’s beliefs and/or practices. I don’t make it a practice of sitting in judgement of others. Yet, you see absolutely nothing wrong with hiding like a coward behind a computer screen and insulting a system of religious beliefs you obviously know nothing about, and then accusing me of bigotry and hatred. OH the irony!!!

Quite frankly, you are in no way qualified to decide what to expect of me or my beliefs. You however, have proven yourself one of the most loathsome, ignorant, bigots I have yet to encounter.

By the way, lest you make more of an ass of yourself than you have on this particular occasion, our tenet is:

“An it HARM NONE, Do what ye will”. You might recognize it. Almost every religion has their own version of it. It’s really no different than “Do unto other’s as you would have them do unto you”. If you don’t recognize it, perhaps you should learn it.

Angry? Hardly. I actually find your hypocrisy amusing. But do yourself and everyone else you decide to focus your bigotry on a favor, don’t judge others based on your ignorance.

  64. You find it bigoted to point out a practice that is customary in the Christian religion?

    No.

And we all know that that is not what you did.

You judged that practice as unreasonable in an attempt to equate Christian Communion with prancing around naked in the moonlight worshipping the “horned god” and casting spells in an attempt to attack me.

I find YOU to be a bigot and a hypocrite since you have a beef with me for telling the truth and rather than address me directly you attack another religion (which I can only assume that you believe that I am a member.)

Clearly you have issues with Christianity… but that is your problem and has nothing to do with our conversation. You do not know what religion I practice if any.

You say that you have “absolutely no problem with it or anyone else’s beliefs and/or practices”, yet where is the first place you go when trying to lash out at me? You attack what you believe to be my religious practices thus exposing yourself to be the ignorant hypocrite.

Why don’t you just get out your broom and your crystals and conjure up some magic spell and cast out all of the evil bigoted demons in your heart and be done with it?

You ARE a witch aren’t you?

Don’t tell me you can’t even cast a spell as simple as that one.

We ALL know? In an attempt to attack you? Lash out at you? I have issues with Christianity? Are you listening to yourself? Paranoid much? Have you sought help from a qualified Mental Health professional for these delusions?

I would have absolutely no problem with you telling the truth if you actually…oh, I don’t know, had any idea what the truth actually was. Have you actually met anyone who was Wiccan? Bothered to research the religion at all? If not, how do you presume yourself qualified to speak for not only myself, my religion, but everyone else as well? And I didn’t realize you knew me well enough to know my intentions or what issues I may have. Your own intentions however, are glaringly obvious to anyone with even a smattering of intelligence.

Allow me to enlighten you. My entire family are all practicing Christians, so I obviously have no issues with Christianity. In point of fact, I believe that Jesus Christ was one of the greatest teachers and spiritual leaders of our time. I just don’t believe he was the only one. So, once again, your talking from somewhere, it just isn’t from the same place most people normally speak. I absolutely have issues with, ignorance, bigotry, intolerance and hatred towards others differences and you epitomize all of those things.

Am I a Witch? Yes, I am and that obviously intimidates you. That’s really very sad, because if you even bothered to educate yourself, rather than choosing instead to make a fool of yourself, you wouldn’t have any reason at all to feel so uneasy.

We do believe in something called, “The Law of Attraction”, however. Meaning that you will attract to yourself exactly what you put forth, for good or ill. So you see, a spell cast on you would be a senseless waste of my energy. You’ll reap what you sow with no help at all from me. N’uff said.

  66. “Have you sought help from a qualified Mental Health professional for these delusions?”

Ha Ha … very funny coming from a witch!

My entire family are all practicing Christians, so I obviously have no issues with Christianity

Well, clearly you do or you would have not left the religion and mock its practices.

“And I didn’t realize you knew me well enough to know my intentions or what issues I may have. Your own intentions however, are glaringly obvious to anyone with even a smattering of intelligence.

Interesting… I guess since I don’t have your “witchly powers” I can’t determine your “glaringly obvious intentions”, but YOU, with your magical abilities can readily determine mine.

Nope, can’t read any delusions, anger or hatred or hypocrisy into your statements, but what can I expect from someone who’s calls herself a witch.

Am I a Witch? Yes, I am and that obviously intimidates you.

    No, it amuses me.

We do believe in something called, “The Law of Attraction”, however. Meaning that you will attract to yourself exactly what you put forth, for good or ill.

Sorry to hear that… with all of the ill will that you are sending my way, you’ll be attracting thrice that for yourself. Oh wait… you said “you will attract to yourself exactly what you put forth“… I guess you must be a reformed witch…

I absolutely have issues with, ignorance, bigotry, intolerance and hatred towards others…

Well, I do agree with you here. You have clearly displayed your ignorance, bigotry, intolerance and hatred towards me.
Have you sought help from a qualified Mental Health professional (or High Priestess) for these issues?

  67. “Am I a Witch? Yes, I am and that obviously intimidates you. “

    No, it amuses me.

No, actually it terrifies you. If not, then you wouldn’t have taken the topic “Police Charge Local Minister In Sunday Evening Pedestrian Accident” and turned it into an attack on the religious beliefs of a complete stranger on a community message board. For the record, it doesn’t take “witchly powers” to recognize a coward, especially one of your calibur.

Quite frankly, my beliefs and/or practices should be absolutely none of your concern. They are obviously of great concern to you however, or you wouldn’t have brought them up repeatedly, despite the fact that topic being discussed had absolutely nothing to do with comparative religion. And just in case your selective memory kicks in and you choose, once again, to forget exactly where this discussion originated, you might want to re-read your comments.

I am quite certain that the creation of this blog was for the purpose of discussing issues effecting the community and not to be used as a venue for you to vent your intolerance of other’s religious beliefs. Your behavior is completely inappropriate, and smacks of issues on your part that should not be aired on a community message board, but in the privacy of psychiatrist’s office.

I’ll waste no more of my time on your ignorance.

“Never attribute to malice that which can adequately be explained by stupidity”.

  68. “No, actually it terrifies you….

Wow, you are really full of yourself, now aren’t you?

Terrifies me…No, it amuses me that a middle-aged woman feels the need to present herself to the community as a witch complete with cape and staff.
    Really, you’re quite entertaining.

…If not, then you wouldn’t have taken the topic “Police Charge Local Minister In Sunday Evening Pedestrian Accident” and turned it into an attack on the religious beliefs of a complete stranger on a community message board.

No, actually I COMPLIMENTED you, saying you were right in your analysis and the voice of reason.
You in response overreacted by attacking me, showing your intolerance of others and exhibiting bias and ignorance, even going so far as to drag in and mock the Christian Religion, assuming, I guess, that I have some relationship to it. And when I pointed out your bias and intolerance, you reacted with even more venom.
Clearly you are the one with issues here. C’mon, you’re a witch. As such, I would have assumed you’d have figured this out by now.

“I am quite certain that the creation of this blog was for the purpose of discussing issues effecting the community and not to be used as a venue for you to vent your intolerance of other’s religious beliefs.”

Really? And exactly how do you square YOUR intolerance of Christian Communion with this statement? Or do those rules not apply to “horned-god” worshippers?
I think we all know who’s behavior is completely inappropriate, and smacks of issues and who needs to spend more time in the privacy of her psychiatrist’s office.

“Never attribute to malice that which can adequately be explained by stupidity”.

    I never called you malicious…
    … nor stupid

Too bad you turned out to be such a humorless whack job, but I guess expecting otherwise based on a few sane comments you made was a mistake on my part.
But that’s me… always looking for the good in people and expecting the best.
