Hi PJ, I was wondering if you could post this on the blog for me.

Last Night Nov. 16th at 5:00 pm , a mother with a child in a stroller were hit by a car. They were crossing Godwin ave. in the pedestrian crosswalk ( cross street Sherman Place ) when they were hit. I heard the thump from inside my house. They were taken to the hospital. Ridgewood Police would not release any info on the current condition of the mother and child and they would not tell me any info about the accident.

  1. I pray both the mother and child are okay. The lack of respect by drivers for pedestrians has steadily increased over the past few years in Ridgewood. It is no wonder that most kids don’t walk to school anymore.

  2. 5 pm is dusk — probably the most dangerous time of day for drivers & pedestrians. I hope mom & the kid are okay.

  3. How many more people have to get killed or hurt before Ridgewood police start enforcing the speed limit.I hope the mother and child are ok.

  4. Walking too and from school is an issue here in Ridgewood.

Not very many people take notice of the 25m/hr speed limit, obey the stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk or take care when they turn on the red.
My child has been hit coming home from school while on a crosswalk and we are still paying for the injuries.

  5. I was horrified to see the mangled stroller this morning. I hope the child and mother are not badly hurt.

Speeding on Godwin Ave is getting worst and crossing at the crosswalks are a death trap!!

Ridgewood police need to do something because its getting worst.

  6. This incident is horrible, and one hopes these folks are ok.

Sadly, things are only going to get worse as we continue to pack more residents, commuters, hospital and business visitors onto our narrow streets. It is particularly bad now as the nights get darker earlier and the streets are not cleared of leaves in a timely fashion.

  7. I am not making any excuses for some drivers, but the pedestrian crossings at that location are hopeless. Unless drivers are paying extreme attention, they do not know that they are there, and once the light fades, they are impossible to see. I don’t understand why pedeistrian crossings in some areas have those big yellow reflective signs and this one doesn’t.

Now as for the drivers, this stretch of Godwin Avenue has had a speeding problem for years. The problem is caused by it being both downhill, and going out of town. It gives the driver the impression that he/she is on some kind of major road, having left Ridgewood. I live on this road and have become used to the excessive speeds, including public buses, as well as the latte-drinking, cell-phone talking, make-up applying idiots.

  8. You think Ridgewood is bad with pedestrian crossing. Try using crosswalks in other towns. Ridgewood is one of the best

  9. The village of Ridgewood and the police are aware that the crosswalks are dangerous. How many more people have to get hit or killed?

This should be a wake-up call, a baby and mother were almost killed because of careless driving. I blame the village of Ridgewood and the police for allowing this to happen!!!!!!!!

  10. ” I blame the village of Ridgewood and the police for allowing this to happen!!!!!!!!”

The driver who failed to yeild is at fault. Some people blame the Village for everything.

BTW – pedestrians should look up once in a while when crossing streets. You can’t expect cars to stop on a dime when you lurch out. Use your head – or your survival instincts.

Kids lack the above skills,so yes I do expect cars to stop on dime.

    “Kids lack the above skills”

That’s why God created parents (and expected them to be involved and responsible)

  13. Re: Kids lack the above skills,so yes I do expect cars to stop on dime.

That may work for you, but I don’t plan on entrusting my kids’ lives to the limitations of machines and the skill of their operators, thank you very much.

BTW, do you believe in evolution?

    Good.

  14. the school buses and njt buses need to slow down, they fly around town.and some of the people need to slow down a bit to they are allways in a rush to take the kids to school, wake up sooner, some are so rude, they are on the phone and drinking a drink and fixing thare makeup.slow down.

I do agree with you I would never let my younger children cross on their own, but I have seen middle school age kids crossing the streets of Ridgewood recklessly. Most of them are paying more attention to what their friends are doing instead of their own suroundings.

As much as we try to teach them and hope they make good decisions, at that age all they want is to appear cool to their friends when parent are not around.

So, that’s what I meant that kids or some kids lack good judgmet when crossing the street.
