Lame Duck Village Council Members Make Last Ditch Effort to Sell Parking Garage Concept

In Uncategorized on June 3, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Speaking for a combined total of one hour during last night’s untelevised Special Public Meeting of the Village Council, to an assembled audience that included only the three councilperson elects, one newspaper reporter, two Village employees, and one taxpayer, outgoing Council members Kim Ringler-Shagin and Jacques Harlow fell just short of pleading for a continued official effort focused on the design and construction of a multi-million dollar retail/parking complex on North Walnut Street.

No additional justification in the form of updated parking studies was presented by either of the lame ducks, just two rather emotional, long-winded, pointless statements. Nor, was any mention made of the legal debacle created by a series of unlawful, back room meetings between Village officials and the owners of the former Town Garage property.

An open note to Ms. Shagin and Mr. Harlow from The Fly: A clear message was sent by voters on May 13. You obviously missed it, so here it is in plain, easy to understand language:

RIDGEWOOD’S TAXPAYERS DON’T WANT TO PAY FOR A MAMMOTH PARKING GARAGE/RETAIL COMPLEX IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT.

MORE RETAIL SPACE ISN’T NEEDED; WE’RE IN AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN! AND, PARKING IS NEEDED AT THE TRAIN STATION, NOT SEVERAL BLOCKS AWAY FROM THE TRAIN STATION ON NORTH WALNUT STREET.

WE VOTED HARLOW & WIEST OUT BECAUSE OF THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR THIS ASININE PROJECT. ARONSOHN, KILLION, & ZUSY HAVE ALL GONE ON THE RECORD AS BEING OPPOSED TO SUCH WASTE – THAT’S WHY WE VOTED THEM IN. DO YOU UNDERSTAND??????????

GIVE IT UP; WE DON’T WANT IT!

YOU’RE DONE; IT’S OVER – GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK!

  1. CAN YOU HEAR US NOW MR. HARLOW? YOU WERE THE BIG ELECTION LOSER. GIVE IT A REST!

  2. Well stated!

  3. I think this is the first time that I agree with The Fly.

  4. The losers still want to be part of all this BS
Funny: today at 1:pm there is Village managerJTH, and loser Betty Weist having lunch at the refurbished Smith Brothers Rest.

People, where are you??? isn’t it time we get all this c____p out of here??

It really is so sad knowing we have so many celebrated smart poeople living in town and they still can not find the time to help out out gretat town I know home on the Hampton is what it’s all about, but I know for sure there is so much FAMILY MONEY around where hte family just’s wait’s for the next estate check
Sounds like sour grapes but it’s ther truth.

    Think about it

  5. This is not the time for those who are leaving to make big decisions. The newly elected council members have ideas of their own. And the people voted for those new ideas.

  6. I agree totally with this entry. Hope there are many who have read it!

  7. 4:51 What are you trying to say????

  8. The residential taxpayers have concluded that it is not in their interest to subsidize the commercial landowners in the DBD by building a large parking garage and “premium retail space”. Commercial development should be left to the private sector. Large infrastructure projects should benefit all the ratepayers, not just the commercial landowners in the DBD. The only thing that is surprising is that this project got so far.

  9. 1:26
Get the big picture, we’re all in this together. It’s the commercial landowners that pay a big chunk of the school tax, while not sending one child to school. If you let the commercial values decrease by having higher vacancy rates/lower rents the result is higher residential property taxes. An empty commercial building has less value on the tax roles.

  10. 12:27 pm –

So are you really telling me that people are not patronizing RW businesses because there is insufficient parking?

Maybe that sharp business mind of yours might be what’s contributing to your problems and not a lack of parking for potential customers.

  11. 12:27
Just stating the facts. The village has done many parking studies over the last 30 years with the same outcome. Not enough parking. That is a fact. Check the town for how commercial property owners have to submit an annual P&L for property value. That is a fact. However, I agree that the parking garage that is/was planned is not the solution, and should be scraped.
Your arrogance is not appreciated is is uncalled for, but I will not stoop to that level.

  12. Thanks for pointing out my arrogance (actually sarcasm, but who can keep track of your many logic errors) and thanks for pointing out that you are staying above it all.

    Your condescendence is appreciated.
(both here and in your original post)

  13. No, I mean arrogant! Sarcasm makes no assumptions.

  14. I know that you meant to call my post “arrogant”, but not surprisingly you got that call wrong as well.

Looks like you continue to apply half effort to analyze a given situation. Arrogance may imply assumption, but that doesn’t mutually exclude assumption from sarcasm. THINK AND ANALYZE… don’t just READ AND REPEAT!

Oh yeah, seeing how you were so close really putting me in my place, I decided to help you out and fix that link for you.
    Here ya go…
    arrogant. (n.d.). Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1).

My goodness! Is there ANYTHING that you can do well?

Now, back to the question at hand… still standing pat on the “parking is the reason your business is failing” position?

Now this post… more arrogant than sarcastic.
    See the difference?

  15. There you go again…. I don’t, and never said I had a business in Ridgewood. Just another of your “implied assumptions”.
