Last Minute Dirty Tricks Mar Village Council Race

In Uncategorized on May 12, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Several Village residents have reported to have been recipients of an automated telephone broadcast yesterday from the Bergen County Republican Organization. The recorded message reportedly asked for voters to support the “team” of Jacques Harlow, Keith Killion, and Betty Wiest in the upcoming race for Village Council in Ridgewood. Additionally, the message stated that failure to support the Harlow, Killion, and Wiest “team” would result in the “County Democratic Machine” taking over Ridgewood.

This morning it was confirmed that candidates Keith Killion and Betty Wiest did NOT authorize use of their names in the Republican Organization’s endorsement, and had no idea who was behind the robot broadcast. However, incumbent Councilman Jacques Harlow is rumored to have approved the use of his name in the announcement.

Harlow, Killion, and Wiest are definitely NOT running as a “team” of any sort, and in fact have conflicting views on several key campaign issues.

and Keith Killion responds….

“A phone message was delivered to Ridgewood households last night from the Ridgewood Taxpayers and the Bergen County Republican Organization, sounding as if I am running with and endorsing Jacque Harlow and Betty Wiest. I did not endorse this message, nor do I endorse Jacque Harlow and Betty Wiest for Council, partisan politics has no place in our municipal election. I do endorse Paul Aronsohn and Anne Zusy and urge you to vote for Paul, Anne and me for Ridgewood Council. We must work to bring the necessary change we so desperately need in Ridgewood. Thank you for you consideration.

Keith Killion
Ridgewood Council Candidate”

Anne Zusy Responds….

dear all, last night a robo call – that’s a “robotic” call that is recorded and dialed out to thousands of households – was made on behalf of the republican party of bergen county urging voters to vote for betty wiest, jacques harlow and keith killion.
not believing that in 2008 any political entity, even at the small, county level, would invoke someone’s name without permission, i thought keith was now running with betty and jacques. hearing the call to vote for those three was a surprise since i have been saying publicly for months that we need a clean sweep and that people should vote for keith, paul and me.
well guess what? it turns out that keith never said his name could be used, and today he issued a statement saying not only that but also that he endorses paul and me and urges that voters elect the three of us. he is after a clean sweep too.
this is sleazy dirty tricks, and partisan politics of the type that’s not supposed to happen in ridgewood.

the fact that this call came from the bergen republican party has been confirmed by betty.
it may possibly have violated campaign law and even if it didn’t, it is an ethical issue and has violated the spirit of the campaign.

on a different matter, i’ve been told from the direct source, who does not want to be identified by name, that betty’s husband quentin, a former ridgewood mayor and mid-level functionary in the county’s republican party, tried to cut a deal last thursday that would have thrown support to paul and keith in exchange for support for betty. i was told that quentin was told what to do with that idea in what is unprintable language.
i urge you to urge your friends and acquaintances in ridgewood to pass the word of the importance of getting out the vote tomorrow . and that the vote should be for paul, keith and me. ridgewood needs good efficient government and this is a golden opportunity.
please let me know if you have any thoughts or questions. polls are open 6am to 8pm.
best, annie

  2. 1124 Kieth nice to see you out yourself as part of the Ferriero machine…

  3. Republican dirty tricks?

Scare tactics about the “Democratic machine”??

    Shocking!!!

  4. PJ looks like the chit has hit the fan ,love to watch the Ferriero machine opperate big mistake Kieth you just lost my vote

  5. here come the housing projects ….

  6. all i want to know is when are we buying life boats for the village hall?

  7. The Ferriero machine…that is funny. After reading this, I am now voting for Keith Killion. I think it is outrageous that a party organization would get involved in a non-partisan election. I didn’t get a call from any Democratic Organization.

  8. This shouldn’t be a who is a democrat and who is a republican issue..The issue should be: who is going to be the best candidate/candidates to listen to what is really important to the residents of the Village and use their common sense to make an educated decision on the issues that are important to us..I’ve never put a candidate’s sign on my lawn before but having known the Killions for approx 13 years I fully support Keith for Village Council..His honesty and integrity, sense of what is right and what is wrong, combined with common sense and problem solving abilities make him a formidable candidate..No wonder why some felt the need for last minute shenannigans..Out with the “same old” … In with the NEW..GO Keith, Paul and Annie!

  9. PJ this is funny these dopes out themselfs and they dont even know it …I wont be voting for any of Ferriero’s goons sorry Keith

  10. I didn’t get a call from any Democratic Organization.

than why is the ” Democratic Organization” posting on this blog ? give me a break go back hoboken

  11. like i said here come the housing projects ridgewood

  12. all I can say is if you win you should take care of the town workers.some one should.

  13. the BCRO is more liberal than most of the deamon-crates ,they should be called the RED-republicans ,btw way didnt Paul get all his funding from Democrates?

  14. Why is “Jacques and Betty” “partisan” but promoting “Ann and Paul” are okay?

  15. I have to laugh at phrases like:
    “…non-partisan election…”

As soon as Paul Aronsohn stepped into the race, it became partisan.

He is not for Ridgewood. He is a hard core party favorite (supposed to be rising star, but more like sputtering star) and this is just an attempt by him to regain his footing and use Ridgewood as a stepping stone. Having been in state government as McGreevy’s spokesman and Federal government, and having failed at getting into the State House with a failed attempt at the 5th district, why would he want to be on a village council and make decisions about swimming pools and security cameras or whether or not to approve repainting the village police cars black and white?

Face it… Aronsohn is just using Ridgewood to hopefully re-launch his stalled political career.

Vote how you’d like, but know what you are voting for…

  16. zuzy –

what’s with all the lowercase letters? are you trying to steal my shtick?

    e e cummings

  17. 1:19 – Are you being obstinate or just ignorant?

From the original message in this thread:

“Additionally, the message stated that failure to support the Harlow, Killion, and Wiest ‘team’ would result in the ‘County Democratic Machine’ taking over Ridgewood.”

  18. I did not get a robo phone call but, for the First time in 40 years living in Ridgewood, I have
KEITH KILLION Lawn Sign on my lawn!

I DO support and I Am voting for:

    KEITH KILLION
    PAUL ARONSOHN
    ANNE ZUSY
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like where they stand on issues. Time for a necessary change for our village.

  19. im a registered republican. i didnt get any calls. this sounds like another democratic SMEAR tactic with ALLEGED calls

  20. true i didnt get a call either

  21. attn town workers if the Ferrierro boys get in they will appoint all there friends and family and you WILL BE FIRED,remember firemen these are the same bunch that STOLE YOUR PENSION! …So you wont have a job or a pension have a nice day

  22. 1:40 – Smart thinking. Republicans are *so* friendly to unions and their pensions.

  23. Wow.

I have read that Anne Zusy is a ditz but I just dismissed it as a play on her name or just as attacks by those who are for other candidates. But after reading her response for this blog entry, I am beginning to wonder if the critics are right.

Anne – Is this how you compose a formal response letter? It is bereft of structure and has no capitalization. It reads like a rambling stream of consciousness rather than a letter. It is unnecessarily long and doesn’t remain on topic.

    Wow.

It’s a bit scary to think that you could be this disorganized in thought for a simple response letter and you can be working on the council where you will frequently be asked to participate in finding the solution to complex issues.

I don’t know if you are up for the job.

  24. 143 thats right i forget this is new jersey the unions will most likely vote for the people that STEAL THEIR PENSIONS hweheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheh

  25. yes if this is a non-partisan election then why are the people from blue new jesery all over this blog suporting Paul?

  26. then why are the people from blue new jesery all over this blog suporting Paul?

Because he’s the best candidate for the job.

As the kids say today: “like, duh.”

  27. Betty’s getting tough, I got my SECOND mass mailed campaign pamphlet in the mail today.
    But why no cookies??

  28. 1:53…

It’s not the lack of capitalization…

It’s the scattered though process and lack of coherent thought that concerns me.

  29. Well keith, your endorsement of Anne and Paul cost you my vote.

Didn’t know you were tied to the Bergen County Democrat machine.

    See ya!!

  30. I did get a call last night, and had already decided before that I wouldn’t vote for Betty or Paul. After hearing Keith’s support for Paul and Anne, well he lost my vote. Anne lost my vote when she started in on installing solar panels and the whole going green agenda. Looks like I will be writting in None of the Above as my choices this year.

  31. Keith, you had my vote. Now, you don’t.

I really thought you were just for Ridgewood. Now you tell me that you are for Aron…, Zuzy and whomever. They are lefties all of them and our government is in trouble in ridgewood because of policies brought on by the left. Namely, spending, more spending and even more spending wildly.
